It is the county seat of Roanoke County, although the two are separate jurisdictions. The Division III Men’s Basketball Championship and Stagg Bowl are held there annually, though the latter is scheduled to relocate beginning in 2018. Salem is also the home to a minor league baseball team, the Salem Red Sox, formerly the Salem Avalanche.
