How many babies does a Coypu have at once? (litter size)

How many baby Coypus are in a litter?

A Coypu (Myocastor coypus) usually gives birth to around 5 babies. With 2 litters per year, that sums up to a yearly offspring of 10 babies.

Each of those little ones spend around 132 days as a fetus before they are released into the wild. Upon birth, they weight 206 grams (0.45 lbs) and measure 5 cm (0′ 2″). They are a member of the Myocastoridae family (genus: Myocastor). An adult Coypu grows up to a size of 52.1 cm (1′ 9″).

To have a reference: Humans obviously usually have a litter size of one ;). Their babies are in the womb of their mother for 280 days (40 weeks) and reach an average size of 1.65m (5′ 5″). They weight in at 62 kg (137 lbs), which is obviously highly individual, and reach an average age of 75 years.

The coypu (from Spanish coipĂș, from Mapudungun koypu; Myocastor coypus), also known as the nutria, is a large, herbivorous, semiaquatic rodent.Classified for a long time as the only member of the family Myocastoridae, Myocastor is now included within Echimyidae, the family of the spiny rats. The coypu lives in burrows alongside stretches of water, and feeds on river plant stems. Originally native to subtropical and temperate South America, it has since been introduced to North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, primarily by fur farmers. Although it is still hunted and trapped for its fur in some regions, its destructive burrowing and feeding habits often bring it into conflict with humans, and it is considered an invasive species.
