What is the maximal age a Binturong reaches?
An adult Binturong (Arctictis binturong) usually gets as old as 22.67 years.
Binturongs are around 92 days in the womb of their mother. When born, they weight 317 grams (0.7 lbs) and measure 21.5 cm (0′ 9″). As a member of the Viverridae family (genus: Arctictis), their offspring is 2 babies per pregnancy. Fully grown, they reach a bodylength of 78.7 cm (2′ 7″).
As a reference: Usually, humans get as old as 100 years, with the average being around 75 years. After being carried in the belly of their mother for 280 days (40 weeks), they grow to an average size of 1.65m (5′ 5″) and weight in at 62 kg (137 lbs), which is obviously highly individual.
The binturong ( bin-TOO-rong) (Arctictis binturong), also known as bearcat, is a viverrid native to South and Southeast Asia. It is uncommon in much of its range, and has been assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because of a declining population trend that is estimated at more than 30% since the mid 1980s.The binturong was first described by Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1822.The genus Arctictis is monotypic and morphologically similar to the genera Paradoxurus and Paguma. The name Arctictis means ‘bear-weasel’, from Greek arkt- ‘bear’ + iktis ‘weasel’.In Riau, Indonesia it was known as tenturun.
