How old does a Coypu get? (age expectancy)

What is the maximal age a Coypu reaches?

An adult Coypu (Myocastor coypus) usually gets as old as 12 years.

Coypus are around 132 days in the womb of their mother. When born, they weight 206 grams (0.45 lbs) and measure 5 cm (0′ 2″). As a member of the Myocastoridae family (genus: Myocastor), a Coypu caries out around 5 little ones per pregnancy, which happens around 2 times a year. Fully grown, they reach a bodylength of 52.1 cm (1′ 9″).

As a reference: Usually, humans get as old as 100 years, with the average being around 75 years. After being carried in the belly of their mother for 280 days (40 weeks), they grow to an average size of 1.65m (5′ 5″) and weight in at 62 kg (137 lbs), which is obviously highly individual.

A Coypu gets as old as 12 years

The coypu (from Spanish coipú, from Mapudungun koypu; Myocastor coypus), also known as the nutria, is a large, herbivorous, semiaquatic rodent.Classified for a long time as the only member of the family Myocastoridae, Myocastor is now included within Echimyidae, the family of the spiny rats. The coypu lives in burrows alongside stretches of water, and feeds on river plant stems. Originally native to subtropical and temperate South America, it has since been introduced to North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, primarily by fur farmers. Although it is still hunted and trapped for its fur in some regions, its destructive burrowing and feeding habits often bring it into conflict with humans, and it is considered an invasive species.
