How old does a Desmarest’s hutia get? (age expectancy)

What is the maximal age a Desmarest’s hutia reaches?

An adult Desmarest’s hutia (Capromys pilorides) usually gets as old as 11.33 years.

Desmarest’s hutias are around 125 days in the womb of their mother. When born, they weight 199 grams (0.44 lbs) and measure 37.5 cm (1′ 3″). As a member of the Capromyidae family (genus: Capromys), their offspring is 2 babies per pregnancy. Fully grown, they reach a bodylength of 1.2 meter (4′ 0″).

As a reference: Usually, humans get as old as 100 years, with the average being around 75 years. After being carried in the belly of their mother for 280 days (40 weeks), they grow to an average size of 1.65m (5′ 5″) and weight in at 62 kg (137 lbs), which is obviously highly individual.

The Desmarest’s hutia (Capromys pilorides), also known as the Cuban hutia, is a species of rodent endemic to Cuba, although an extinct subspecies is known from the Cayman Islands. Weighing up to 8.5 kg (19 lb), it is the largest of the extant species of hutia (the extinct giant hutias were far larger).
